National Sports Awards 2024

he Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS) has announced the recipients of the National Sports and Adventure Awards for 2024 on January 2, 2025. 

These prestigious awards will be presented at a ceremony on January 17, 2025, at 11:00 am at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where President Droupadi Murmu will confer the honors.

These awards, celebrating outstanding achievements in sports, include:


  1. Arjuna Award
  2. Dronacharya Award
  3. Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award &
  4. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy.
  5. Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar

Applications were accepted exclusively online via a dedicated portal, allowing athletes, coaches, and entities to self-nominate. 

 The winners were chosen from a vast pool of nominations by a Selection Committee chaired by Justice (Retd.) V. Ramasubramanian of the Supreme Court of India, along with distinguished athletes, sports journalists, and sports administrators as committee members.

In November 2024, the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS) has announced the discontinuation of Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award and introduced Arjuna Award (Lifetime).

The list of National Sports Awards 2024  Winners is particularly relevant for aspirants preparing for competitive exams like the Kerala PSC, as questions on the National Sports Awards 2024 may appear in the upcoming Kerala PSC examinations.

1. List of Dronacharya Award Winners 2024


The 'Dronacharya Award for Great Coaches in Sports and Games' is granted to coaches who consistently undertake outstanding and meritorious work and enable athletes to thrive in international competitions.

In 2024, two athletes earned the Dronacharya Award in the Lifetime Achievement category, while three athletes received the Dronacharya Award in the Regular category.



  • First Awarded in – 1985 (Regular) & 2011 (Lifetime).
  • Award – 
    • Lifetime  – ₹15 lakh, certificate, ceremonial dress and a bronze statue of Dronacharya.
    • Regular  – ₹10 lakh, certificate, ceremonial dress and a bronze statue of Dronacharya.
  • First Winners –
    • Lifetime  – Kunal Roy (Athletics) & Rajinder Singh (Hockey).
    • Regular  – O. M. Nambiar (Athletics), Om Prakash Bhardwaj (Boxing) & Bhalchandra Bhaskar Bhagwat (Wrestling).
  • The first woman to win the Dronacharya Award – Hansa Sharma (Weightlifting, 2000).
  • No. of Recipients in 2024 – 2 (Lifetime) & 3 (Regular).

2. Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award 2024


The 'Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award' is awarded to a sportsperson for their remarkable and excellent accomplishment in sports during the past four years.

  • First Awarded in – 1991.
  • First Winner – Viswanathan Anand (Chess).
  • Award –  ₹25 lakh, certificate and a medallion.
  • Former name –  Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna (renamed on August, 2021)
  • No. of Recipients in 2024 – 4.

3. List of Arjuna Awards Winners 2024


This year, 32 athletes earned the Arjuna award for outstanding achievement in Sports and Games during the preceding four years, as well as for demonstrating traits of leadership, sportsmanship, and discipline.

It was the highest sports award in India before the introduction of Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in 1991.

  • First Awarded in – 1964.
  • Award –  ₹15 lakh, certificate, ceremonial dress and a bronze statue of Arjuna.
  • Former name –  Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna (renamed on August, 2021)
  • No. of Recipients in 2024 – 32.

4. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy 2024


The Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy is awarded to the university with the best overall performance in inter-university events.

  • First Awarded in – 1956.
  • First Winners  –  Bombay University
  • Awards –  ₹15 lakh & Trophy.
  • 2024 Winners – 
    • Chandigarh University (Overall winning university),
    • Lovely Professional University, Punjab (1st Runner Up),
    • Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar (2nd Runner Up).

Chandigarh University now holds the record for winning the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy for the maximum number of times (17 times). 



5. Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar

It is awarded to corporate entities in public and private sector, NGOs, and sports control boards who played a significant role in promoting the sports.

  • First Awarded in – 2009.
  • First Winners  –  Tata Steel & Railways Sports Promotion Board. 
  • Award –  Trophy & Citation.
  • 2024 Winners – Physical Education Foundation of India
