M.
T. Vasudevan Nair, also known as Madathu Thekkepattu Vasudevan Nair, was one of the greatest luminaries of Malayalam literature and cinema. 

Renowned for his profound storytelling and exceptional insight into human emotions, MT passed away on December 25, 2024, following heart failure. 

He was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kozhikode, Kerala, at the time of his demise.

Popularly called MT, his passing marks the end of an era, leaving behind an enduring legacy in literature and cinema.

Renowned for his unparalleled storytelling and profound insight into human emotions, MT has left an indelible mark as a novelist, short story writer, screenwriter, and film director.


Early Life and Career


Born on July 15, 1933, in Kudallur, a quaint village in Palakkad district of Kerala, MT was the youngest of four children to T. Narayanan Nair and Ammalu Amma. 

His childhood on the banks of the Nila River inspired much of his work, as he often referred to the river as one of his greatest muses.

His works often reflect the simplicity and ethos of village life, interwoven with complex human relationships.

MT's professional journey began as a teacher and gramasevakan in a block development office in Kannur. In 1957, he joined Mathrubhumi Weekly as a sub-editor, marking the start of a prolific literary career. 



Literary Contributions


MT Vasudevan Nair redefined Malayalam literature with works that reflect the simplicity and complexity of Kerala's socio-cultural landscape.  

M.T.’s first break in literature came when "Valarthumrigangal," one of his short stories set against the backdrop of a circus written during college days, won the first prize in a competition conducted by the New York Herald Tribune, Mathrubhumi, and Hindustan Times. 

His first major novel, "Naalukettu," published in 1958, is considered as a classic of modern Malayalam literature. 

The novel explores the dissolution of the traditional joint family system through the eyes of a young boy struggling with identity and belonging.

It also earned him the Kerala Sahitya Akademi award at the age of 25.
