The Asian Games, also known as Asiad, is a multi-sport event held once every four years, bringing together athletes from across Asia to compete in various sports disciplines. It is considered as the biggest sports competition in Asia and the second-largest multi-sport event globally.
Established in 1951, the Games aim to promote unity, friendship, and sportsmanship among Asian nations was initially regulated by the Asian Games Federation (AGF) from 1951 to 1978.
After the dissolution of the AGF, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) organized the event starting from 1982 onwards.
The Asian Games is recognized by the International Olympic Committee and its emblem depicts the rising sun encompassed by interlocking rings.
The event was scheduled to be held in September 2022 but faced a postponement due to the escalating COVID-19 cases in China. Consequently, the event was rescheduled and is set to take place in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China, spanning from September to October 2023.
A significant milestone was achieved in the history of the Asian Games as India, for the first time, surpassed a three-figure mark in its medals tally.
India's exceptional performance resulted in its best-ever medal count, surpassing the previous record of 70 medals achieved during the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games. This feat marked a historic moment as India crossed the 100-medal mark, becoming the fourth nation after China, Japan, and South Korea to accomplish this milestone.
The 20th Asian Games will be held in the city of Nagoya, Japan in 2026.
