Every year in October, committees in Sweden and Norway award six Nobel Prizes, one of the world's most prestigious awards. Each prize honors an individual or organisation for making a significant contribution to a particular discipline.
The Nobel Prizes are prestigious awards given according to Alfred Nobel's will of 1895. Alfred Nobel was a Swedish chemist, engineer, and industrialist best known for developing dynamite. 1896 saw his passing.
The Nobel Prize was given out for the first time in 1901, and since then, 975 people and organisations have received it 609 times.
The Nobel Prize was first exclusively awarded to those who had made outstanding contributions to the fields of physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace. Later, the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences was also established with funding from Sweden's central bank.
