- January 9: Commemoration of Gandhiji's return to India from South Africa on January 9, 1915. Purpose - to recognize the Non-Resident Indians who have contributed to the development of India. First celebrated in 2003.
- Lal Bahadur Shastri - Second Prime Minister of Independent India, popularized the slogan 'Jai Jawan Jai Kisan'
- The theme of National Youth Day is 'Channelizing Youth Power for Nation Building.'
- January 15 - Indian Army Day: Field Marshal Kodandera M Cariappa in 1949 took over as the 1st Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from General Sir Francis Butcher, the last British Commander-in-Chief.
- January 20 - American Holiday in commemoration of Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., which is observed on the third Monday of January so it varies each year. (original birthday January 15)
- January 23 - Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose - birth - 23 January, 1897 in Cuttack, Orissa.
- January 26 - Indian Republic Day: 26 January 1950- date on which the Constitution of India came into effect.
- National Voters Day - to mark the foundation day of Election Commission of India established on 25 January 1950. Year 2020 marks 10th National Voters Day and the theme of National Voters Day this year is ‘Electoral Literacy for a Stronger Democracy.’
